A short 46-second video allows viewers to watch what takes place when meat is thrown into a Brazilian river.
In between two boats, a slab of raw meat is thrown into the brownish water. What follows can best be described as a rapid flurry of activity as the piranhas in the water immediately attack the meat.
After approximately 10 seconds, another slab is thrown in on an adjacent area between two boats, with the furious gnawing by the piranhas continuing. Just seconds later, yet another slab is tossed in, with similar results taking place.
Within the last five seconds of the video, one final piece is tossed is, with the absolute same results happening. Each of the many piranhas, who are known for having incredibly sharp teeth, are fighting each other for a scrap of the meat.
Those sharp teeth can quickly mean death for any individual unfortunate enough to come into contact with them. That was case in March, when a six-year-old Brazilian girl was killed after her family’s canoe capsized. In just a matter of moments, the flesh on the girl’s legs had been stripped clean.
Despite the seeming competition that pirahas have with each other, the huge swarm of pirahas in the video are a result of the fact that the fish will often travel together. That is a safety precaution they have developed, since they tend to be hunted by other forms of sea life.
