Pope Francis has upset the cozy alliance between the GOP and the Catholic Church. The right wing of the GOP were more or less in sync with Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI on a variety of conservative issues such as abortion.
Pope Francis has challenged both economic conservatives and the Christian Fundamentalists who make up the right wing of the GOP. The Pope has compared Christian Fundamentalists to Muslim Fundamentalists like ISIS.
He encouraged the U.S and Cuba to reconcile, He has repeatedly criticized capitalism and climate change, If that is not enough, Pope Francis has also called for the Catholic Church to fully accept gay people, and he told a child that his dog would go to heaven; Pope Francis is very much a socially conscious Pope who embraces social issues that are usually aligned with the liberal spectrum of the political world.
He has had harsh words about human trafficking, rampant consumerism, and worker exploitation. He encouraged nations to not only enact laws to protect workers but to make it illegal for companies to employ slave labor overseas.
Pore Francis’ liberalism appears to be seriously upsetting the traditional alliance between the GOP and the Catholic Church. In actual fact, it is only Anglo-white Catholics who traditionally vote for the Republican Party. Latino Catholics tend to vote for Democratic candidates. The leadership of the Republican Party, however, tends to be Anglo-whites.
