Here is a video of Rollie the southern three-banded armadillo. He actually lives at the Zoo in Green Bay. However, his species is threatened in the wild. As with most endangered animals, habit destruction is one of the biggest factors. But, strangely, for this species, the pet trade is another significant factor. It is generally illegal to keep endangered animals as pets. If you see one for sale at a pet shop, you should report it to the appropriate authorities.
However, watching this 32 second video clip of Rollie playing with a pink toy may give you some idea of why some people would want these odd animals as pets. Even though his armor makes him not very cuddly, he is very funny and cute as he prances around as if on tippy toes and stalks his helpless pink toy. He is at least as cute as typical kitten, even though kittens are more huggable.
For an armored creature, Rollie is surprisingly delicate in his movements and behavior. It really does not fit with my expectation that he would be about as subtle and smooth as the proverbial bull in a china shop. It’s funny to watch the way he rolls across the floor when he curls up around his toy. It makes you wonder what important skill his play is intended to develop.
