Texas can be a scary place to be a practitioner of the Muslim faith. It was when protesters surrounded a recent conference being held there. When the protesters found out that the conference would be held there, they surrounded the building and started yelling slurs at the group.
A lot of the speech and signs held were along the theme of “You are not Americans”. One protester was seen holding a sign that said “You are not Americans, go home and take Obama with you”. The meeting being held at a local school was part of the reason for the anger in the public.
They felt that the people in the conference were not Americans and that their tax dollars were not also being spent to build and maintain the school. This whole story is ironic and irritating. The fact of the matter is that the individuals at the meeting are Americans.
They also do pay their taxes and have just as much right as others to hold their meetings in a public place. They had to get the proper paperwork in order to hold such a meeting in the first place.
Those who were protesting were fully within their rights to do so as well, but they are sadly misinformed about a lot of what was going on. They seem to be filled with hatred and fear of another group. Luckily, the group was allowed to continue with their meeting and should always be allowed to do exactly that.
