Popping up in major cities are what are being called “anti-homeless spikes” and they look exactly as they sound. These spikes are being put in places to deter the homeless population from sitting, standing, or resting in those areas. These spikes have been seen popping up on concrete steps in Tokyo, Montreal, and London in recent years.

However an art collective in London got tired of looking at these “anti-homeless spikes” outside of a local nightclub recently. The group called “Space, Not Spikes” have taken it upon themselves to reclaim the areas that are currently covered in the hostile spikes.

The art collective are finding these areas and covering the spikes with thick bedding and pillows. They are also placing a bookshelf nearby that is fully stocked with plenty of material for anyone to stop and read. The bookshelf has a little sign asking those reading the books to leave them behind for others to enjoy as well.

The “Space, Not Spikes” project has gathered interest across the world. International pop star Ellie Goulding mentioned the project on her Instagram page and showed her support. The art collective is continuing to work to change the minds and hearts of those in regards to the homeless population. Leah Borromeo, who is a spokesperson for “Space, Not Spikes”, said in an interview with “Upworthy”, humans need to look out for each other.
