Tiny Owl Engages Adorable Standoff With Sheriff’s Deputies

Most stories that involve the words “police standoff” don’t have a happy ending, let alone an adorable one. That’s why we’re so excited to share this particular story with you. It involves two sheriff’s deputies and one tiny owl.

The story takes place near Boulder, Colorado–the home of the University of Colorado, known for its breathtaking mountain views and relaxed, hippy attitude. Boulder County Sheriff’s Deputy Sophie Berman was traveling down a mountain road when she spied the baby owl in the middle of the road. She pulled over to assist the feathery intruder.

Deputy Berman exited her car and met the cute culprit–a small owl, still standing in the road. In the video that has now gone viral, the owl stares down the deputy, unwilling to move. She cocks her head both ways, almost as if to say, “What do you want? I’m not doing anything wrong.” Berman laughs audibly in the video. Owls can be very protective and territorial–it seemed like Berman had met her match!

Luckily, the problem was quickly solved when the owl seemed to grow bored of its police interaction. It flew away, safely perching in a nearby tree. Deputy Berman tweeted the video of the interaction, giving it the hashtag #DeputiesLoveBabyOwls. The story was picked up by several national news outfits who, let’s be honest, were probably delighted to report on a police story that had a happy, heartwarming ending. It’s a real “who” dunit–sorry for the pun!
