Monica Smith is one crafty grandma. She turned her 8′ x 10′ shed into a heartwarming story that has gone viral across the Internet.
Like many, Monica had a little wooden shed in her backyard. She kept her gardening tools in the shed as well as any items that didn’t fit her main house. It was not too uncommon to see Monica around the shed because she likes spending time outside gardening.
But one day neighbors began to notice when she started spending a lot of time in her shed. The shed began to transform as she put in hours upon hours of work. The grandma turned that little shed into a cute two-story house.
It turns out that Monica’s daughter fell on hard financial times. Being a good grandmother, Monica allowed the daughter and her family to move into the main house. It was Monica’s plan to move into the shed to make room for the new family.
What is astounding about the whole situation is the transformation of the shed. Monica did all the work by herself and morphed the shed into an enchanting little house that you might find in the thick of the woods.
Like many, you may think a shed is unlivable. But tiny houses are all the rage. Some are turning to tiny living in order to remove the clutter from their lives. Others are turning to tiny living because they do not want to spend an exorbitant amount on a house. And tiny houses have recently been used to remedy homelessness in cities throughout the United States. In a way, Monica is using her tiny house in order to remedy her own family’s homeless situation.
Monica added a second story to the shed in order to make room for her bed underneath the point of the elongated triangular roof. The upstairs has plenty of light with a full-sized window and it even has a closet for her clothes.
The downstairs features a kitchenette complete with a sink and a mini fridge. There is a small two-person table complete with a grandmother-style doily. And there is hidden storage all around, including space for her cupboards, shelving for her pantry, and drawers for her silverware.
There is not much headroom but it does not appear Monica needs it. In fact, her new tiny house has exactly what she needs. But just because the space is amazingly efficient does not mean that Monica skimped on that classic grandma style.
The windows all have treatments and curtains, there are plenty of small paintings adorning the place, and there are a variety of crosses hanging on the wall just above the futon. In the futon is incredibly inviting, always covered in a floral duvet.
Opposite the futon is the entertainment center consisting of a cute little hutch with the TV resting atop. The hutch has room for pictures, drawers, DVDs and jewelry. And all the wires for the TV and cable box fit nicely behind the wooden structure.
This is one capable grandma. She built her own two-story house in her backyard during her family’s time of need and the only way to get up to her bedroom is by a skinny little ladder. The ladder was obviously installed to save room inside her tiny house.
Her bedroom window looks over her backyard. And her backyard leads to the back door of her full-sized house. The full-size house is where her daughter and grandchildren live which ensures that Monica can look forward to many loving years inside of her tiny home that she built with her own two hands.
