When Lauren Waguespack auditioned for the X Factor about a year ago, she went hoping to hear a “yes” from the judges.
Her boyfriend, David Grey, auditioned as well in support of her dreams. Singing an off-key rendition of Usher’s “Nice and Slow”, he quickly got a unanimous no and was booed by the audience. It was not Simon’s “yes”, however, that he had come hoping to hear.
Having asked her father for his blessing shortly before the auditions, David appeared on stage after Simon stopped Lauren’s performance of Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream”. The judges had yet to give their answers to Lauren, but he interrupted before they had a chance.
Armed with a microphone and small, black, velvet box, David asked her the question that would forever change her life. Surprising Lauren, Lauren’s family, the audience, and the judges, David asked Lauren to marry him. Amidst cheering and clapping, she said “yes”, and the couple got a rare smile from Simon Cowell.
Though the judges were moved and excited by the romantic couple and the important moment in their lives, neither of them got past the audition stage. It is doubtful, however, that either of them will look back on this moment of a lifetime with anything but happy memories.
