Agnes and Kevin Stringfellow were charged with causing their dog unnecessary pain and suffering after a concerned citizen made a call to the RSPCA. She had seen the couple’s German Shepard in a car, and was horrified by what she saw. When officers visited Mrs. Stringfellow’s home, they too were shocked at the dog’s condition. The German Shepard, named Spike, had no fur left on his face. The exposed skin was raw where it wasn’t covered in half-healed scars.

Spike was immediately taken to a Veterinary office, where it was determined that his face was inflamed and severely infected. They decided that the only way to end his suffering was to euthanize him. Staff members are reported to have been so upset by Spike’s condition that they had to leave the room. After speaking with Mr. and Mrs. Stringfellow it was discovered that the dog had, in fact, been diagnosed with a chronic skin condition known as facial dermatitis.

Although they are married, the Stringfellows do not share a residence. It appears Spike spent most of his time with Mrs. Stringfellow. After calling the Veterinary office where the dog had last been treated, investigators were informed that he had not been seen since 2006. This meant that the dog had been suffering in pain and discomfort for 8 years, with no treatment.

The couple was charged with failure to protect the dog, and with causing him unnecessary suffering. Mr. Stringfellow acknowledged his guilt, and was banned from keeping cats or dogs for 10 years. He was also ordered to pay the Veterinary fees as compensation. Mrs. Stringfellow did not attend the hearing, but the case against her was proven and adjourned.
