Losing a loved one can be a terrible thing. While many usually think of grief and sadness as solely human emotions, animals also experience deep sadness when they lose someone they love. Such is the case of George, a dog living in Corryton, Tennessee.
George was heartbroken when his companion of twelve years, a Labrador named Blackie, died in 2014. Poor George has been grief stricken ever since, so much so that his owner, Jacquie Litton, wondered if the big guy would survive his emotional distress.
All that changed last week. On the second anniversary of Blackie’s death, a duck cuddled up to George and they have been inseparable ever since. George’s owners have been astounded by the change in their pet’s mood, crediting the duck with George’s renewed happiness. Litton explained the strange occurrence on Facebook, posting,
“It is strange for a duck to just appear at our house and be attached to your dog, and even more strangely, the anniversary week of Blackie’s passing.”
For whatever reason the duck appeared, Litton and her family welcome their new feathered friend, allowing him to stay inside their house. The family is currently contemplating naming George’s friend Donald, and George even lets the bird sleep with him in his bed.
Since posting the news on Facebook, Litton and her family have become the talk of social media. Many of Litton’s followers say that George’s story is proof that animals feel as much as people, and that healing can come in the most unexpected form.
