The GOP may get to enjoy some satisfaction out of the idea that a woman is being put in jail for having a miscarriage. This is the story of a woman in El Salvador who had a miscarriage and is now facing 30 years of jail time as a result. In El Salvador, the practice of abortion is completely illegal.
A pregnant woman in that country named Guadalupe was worked for a wealthy family in the country as a housekeeper. One day while working, she fell and collapsed. She was taken to the hospital but doctors there had to tell her that she had suffered a miscarriage.
This news alone would be devastating to anyone, but it gets worse for Guadalupe. The woman was dragged off to court and without the benefit of legal representation, the court decided that she was guilty of the crime of homicide because of what had happened.
Guadalupe learned that she would be spending the next 30 years in jail. There are currently many other cases in El Salvador of women facing the same charges and having faced the same penalties.
This is something that we are luckily not seeing in the States at this point, but it could be not so far off. Certain Republican lawmakers from all across the country would like to see women’s bodies criminalized. It is a scary situation that can lead women to jail for no other crime than being a woman. A miscarriage is something that no one ever wants to have happen, so it is sad to see this many women being impacted by it in this way.
