VIDEO: I Couldn’t Tell What She Was Making, But By The End I Was Blown Away

Holland House Candles in the Netherlands still makes traditional hand carved candles.

These decorative candles are truly works of art. The candle is made by layering many different colors of wax. The artist dips the core shape into the different colors of wax, and each layer is hardened with a dip in cool water. After about 35 layers, the artist stops and redefines the shape of the candle. Then the dipping begins again.

By the end of the process there is a lot of wax that has dripped down. This is cut off and shaped while warm into a beautifully swirled candle. The main candle must be carved within fifteen minutes. Otherwise, it will be too hard to work with.

The artist quickly carves, peels, and shapes the candle with a steady hand. At least one year of training is needed to gain this kind of skill. Finally the candle is given the final touches near the top. Gracefully placed designs are cut out such as tulips, a windmill and birds. The artist then uses a cookie cutter ring to cut down into the center of the candle forming a well around the wick.

This will ensure that the wax will always drip down the center of the candle. When the candle is lit, the carvings really come to life. It is truly breathtaking as the light shines through the different levels and colors of wax.
