Most people have been taught that beauty is only skin deep, and it is on the inside that really counts. However, some people seem to miss out on this very important lesson. A 19 year-old girl named Ciara Swaringen has Giant Congenital Melanocytic Nevus. This is a skin condition that causes a person’s body to be covered with hundreds of birthmarks and moles on their body. She was born with this condition.
Ciara was taunted by the kids at school because of her condition. She was also subjected to rude stares from strangers. Ciara recalls being called a spotty dog by a boy at the bus stop. She says that the comment had a negative effect on her self-esteem. She knew from an early age that she was different from the other children.
The doctors could not remove Ciara’s birthmarks because she has so many. As she got older, the number of birth marks that she had increased. The birth marks are not harmful, but she has to be very careful when she goes out in the sun.
Despite the fact that Ciara still has birthmarks, she has learned to embrace them. At the age of 19, she is more confident than ever before. She says that everyone is different, and her birthmarks make her feel unique.
