Finding a designated driver for those Friday nights at the bar is an important yet often ignored factor in safe alcohol consumption. After a night of drinking, too many drivers take the wheel under the impression that they are fit to drive, or that they have no other option. These kinds of poor choices put not only the driver themselves at risk, but also others on the road.

Now, a pub in Kamloops, British Columbia is stepping in and doing what they can to change people’s minds. In an effort to keep their intoxicated patrons off of the road, Duffy’s Pub is offering their customers a proposal to keep their cars at the bar for the night. The incentive? A twenty five dollar gift certificate to the bar if they make the smart decision.

The next morning, sobered drivers can safely pick up their cars from the parking lot to find the gift certificate and a note on their dashboard. One line in the note reads, “[T]hank you for leaving your vehicle here and choose a safer way of getting home.”

According to the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, every year about 13,000 people die due to alcohol related accidents, and just under 1.5 million DWI arrests are make, with 780,000 convicted. It may seem small, but Duffy’s Pub is making a bold and powerful move in combating the dangers of drunk driving.
