Donald Trump’s erratic behavior has continued to confuse and concern people throughout the election. With his obvious hypocrisy, worrying racism, and blatant lies, many are wondering how he has even become a viable candidate in the first place. This hypocrisy is evident not only in Trump’s current statements but also in his past interviews and public appearances.
Recently, an old interview on Letterman has come to light. In this clip, David Letterman manages to highlight one of the most worrisome facets of Trump’s behavior. The video begins with Trump going off on a rant about how China is stealing business from loyal American citizens. According to Trump, China is “ripping our heart out” by underbidding American business companies. After these passionately anti-China statements, Trump then goes on to promote his newest clothing line, which he proudly claims includes the “number one selling tie in the world.”
Letterman expresses some skepticism over Trump’s claims about how popular his clothing is, and then Letterman goes on to ask Trump where his items are made. Trump proudly states that they are made in Bangladesh, where he helps third world people to get a useful job. Letterman then pulls out a few samples of Trump’s clothing line. Some of the clothing is indeed made in Bangladesh, but it turns out that the “number one selling tie in the world” is actually made in China.
When Trump is called out for taking advantage of China’s cheap labor while publicly criticizing businesses who make their products in China, he is obviously flustered for a moment. However, he then goes off onto a long speech about how China manipulates its currency to somehow force poor, powerless businesses to let China make items for them in their factories.
At the end of the interview, Trump continues to brush off Letterman’s attempts to talk to him about his unethical business practices. Instead Trump ends his interview with yet another plug for his clothing line, which he tells the audience to buy at Macy’s. However, after consistent outrage over Trump’s xenophobic and racist views, Macy’s has decided that they are no longer willing to sell Trump’s brand of clothes. This is just one of the many financial setbacks Trump has faced since his presidential campaign has caused more people to scrutinize his shady business tactics.
This video is just one of the many examples of a time that Trump has not practiced what he preaches. Trump will say things that make him sound good to the average blue-collar worker, but the most basic investigation shows that he clearly violates these principles and takes advantage of blue-collar workers to make more money with his businesses. When Trump has to choose between principles or making money, he always chooses to add to his fortune. And when people call him out on this bad behavior, Trump tries to deflect questioning and confuse opponents with lengthy, nonsensical rants.
