George Jones was more than just a superstar of the country world, to many he was an embodiment of the American Dream. He was a simple man born into a family during the Great Depression, anf tried to do his part to help his struggling family as a child when he went out into the streets to sing for money.
When he reached his twenties he tried his hand at recording country records and soon after his life changed. In 1955 he wrote his first hit song and was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry. From this point on he lived his life as country royalty and was more than able to support his family and many others. He passed away in April of 2013 which dealt a devastating blow to the entire country music world.
His funeral was held in Nashville, and in true country fashion thousands of country stars were in attendance to pay tribute and honor him. Vince Gill, a modern country hit maker, took the stage at the funeral to honor him along with Patty Loveless.
Vince joked that Jones used to call him Sweetpea, a nickname which he hated but eventually learned to love. It was clear that the duo had a close relationship as Gill was hardly able to choke back his tears during the very emotional and heartfelt performance of ‘Go Rest High On That Mountain.’
