VIDEO: She’s Adding Hooks to The Ends of Her Old Scarf. Why? I Need To Try This Too!

Changing the look of a camera strap is a fun way to accessorize and show off personality. Getting a new look does not mean having to buy a new strap. By using an old belt, several swivel hooks, scissors and a sewing machine, the look of the previous strap can be completely changed.

First the scissors should be used to cut the excess material off of the belt, including the holes that are used to adjust the belt size. The length should then be checked by wrapping the belt around the neck, ensuring that it is long enough to fit comfortably. If the belt is too short, the project should be started again using a longer belt.

The belt should be placed on a sturdy table or bench with the decorative side facing up. Next, two swivel hooks should be slid up approximately two inches from the each end of the belt. The hooks should be wide enough that the sides of the belt don’t bunch. The remaining belt should then be folded down and pinned into place.

Using the sewing machine, a box with an “X” is then sewn onto the folded down belt material. This will give plenty of support and ensure that the swivel hooks remain in place. If a sewing machine is unavailable this can be sewn by hand. The belt material may make hand-sewing more difficult, however, so a sewing machine is recommended. After both sides of the strap are sewn, the new strap is complete.

An upcycled camera strap from a belt is more affordable than a new strap and is a great way to add color and personality to any camera.
