Many people cannot get attention or wow people during an entire lifetime. Silas Phillips managed to do this in his very first few minutes of life. Only a few days old now, he has already been able to amaze doctors and people all over the Internet.
Basically, what he did was show people a live view of life in the womb; he was born while still completely inside his amniotic sac. A fetus grows and develops within this sac while inside the mother; this is how the fetus receives its protection from outside forces and its nutrition. However, the sac almost always ruptures during labor or delivery. It is considered rare for a baby to just have a part of the amniotic sac after it is born, but to be completely surrounded by it happens in the case of less than 1 in 80,000 babies. This phenomenon is referred to as “en caul.”
Silas was three months premature and born via Cesarean section, which made his case even more striking. A doctor who helped deliver him said: “It was a moment that really did, even though its a cliche: We caught our breath.
It really felt like a moment of awe.” The doctors instantly made sure he was able to breathe, and his mother learned later that day what a rarity her son was. Silas is said to be doing well; as his proud mother lovingly stated, “Since the moment he was born, he’s been a little fighter.”
