Every parent knows the struggle of providing a roof over their children’s heads. That’s true of human’s as well as animals who might not have a place to keep their babies warm, safe and dry. Often, parents will make amazing sacrifices for their children, and it can warm our hearts. It’s always more amazing when we see it, not in humans, but in the animal world. It’s intuitive, which is something that is in every parent whether animal or human.
Over a year ago, there was a story about a dog that had dug a hole on top of its owner’s grave. It was seen as a grieving dog intent on being close to its master. This heartbreaking picture went viral as a touching story of devotion between a man’s best friend and its beloved owner.
While there have been dozens of stories online that talk of the unshakable bond between a dog and its owner, this wasn’t actually one of those stories. Those stories are about love and the bond that exists between those who love each other. This story was still about love and devotion, but between a mother and her offspring.
The dog actually dug out a hole from this grave because she was protecting her family. She’d given birth to a litter of puppies. Since she was homeless, she didn’t have any place to keep them safe, secure and warm. She dug the hole and secured them inside while using her body to provide them shelter and warmth. The location of the hole she dug was a complete coincidence, or she could have chosen that spot in the cemetery because it’s quiet and solitary.
The mother and her pups were rescued by a local citizen. That person saw that when the mother left the hole, there were puppies deep within the ground. The citizen coaxed the mother out of the hole and gained the dog’s confidence, so the mother dog would eat out of the person’s hand. The mom and her puppies were all brought in for medical attention.
The story has a happy ending since the puppies have grown into happy, healthy dogs. While it started as a story about a grieving canine who was missing its owner, it turned into a feel-good story of its own and the animals are all very safe and secure in loving homes now.
