Traditionally, baby showers are seen to be the realm of women. That certainly seems to have been the opinion of the commanding officer who received a request from one of his army specialists to get leave in order to go to a baby shower.
The CO denied the leave and made it very clear that he did not consider a baby shower to be a man’s territory. Perhaps he doubted the man’s story, or perhaps he was editorializing. Either way, it looked like the specialist wasn’t going to get the time off.
Still, he wasn’t one to give up easily. Annoyed at the outdated idea that men don’t go to baby showers, he decided to make a point by resubmitting his request. This time, he included every manly activity he could think of when asked to provide the reason for his leave. From eating bacon to shooting guns and wrestling bears, he laid on the masculine stereotypes as thickly as he could to make a point about his CO’s prejudices.
His snarky response has gone viral, and it has sparked a debate about whether or not it is suitable for men to go to baby showers. While responses vary, it seems clear that a man who is putting his life on the line for the sake of the country ought to be able to go home for a few days to celebrate the new life that he is striving to protect.
