They say that children are the best at judging a person’s character, even the character of someone they just met. Eight-year-old Amariyanna Copeny may have demonstrated how perceptive children are after recently having photographs taken with President Barack Obama and GOP nominee Donald J. Trump. Her reactions to meeting each man was vastly different.
Amariyanna is the reigning Little Miss Flint. After her hometown of Flint, Michigan was ravaged by a serious water crisis, Amariyanna wrote a letter to President Obama and invited him to pay Flint a visit in order to put the serious health crisis into a national spotlight. President Obama accepted and in May came to speak to the local residents. At the gathering, Amariyanna surprised everyone with a running leap into the President’s arms to give him a big hug. She had a happy expression on her face and was obviously at peace with the leader of the free world.
When Donald Trump showed up to address the people of Flint, however, Amariyanna’s reaction was a little bit different. The little princess affected a pained and troubled expression as Trump shook her hand and posed for a photo. The photo was so vivid in depicting how differently the young girl viewed the two men that it went viral on social media. Many pointed out that her look of worry accurately represents the worry of many in the Democratic party of what a Trump victory will mean to the United States.
There are many voters who are still undecided about the upcoming election. They may be inclined to weigh little Amariyanna’s reactions in their consideration of Trump’s trustworthiness. There was clearly something about her meeting with Trump that made Little Miss Flint uncomfortable.
