The great thing about creative crafts is that a good eye can spot the most useless clutter – junk to most people – and turn it into something clever that will inspire and amaze those around them. Here’s a good example of that.
Those of us born without a green thumb get tired of our plants giving up the ghost, and wind up with wire baskets they simply hang empty, as an ugly reminder. As it happens, there is a way to repurpose them into something worthy of displaying in your home.
For starters, remove the chains which the baskets hang by, and place two baskets mouth-to-mouth to in the shape of a sphere. Fasten them together in this form with floral wire, or something similar that won’t ruin the overall look – anything that works and will stay neatly in place. Just be sure the baskets are secured together well enough so that they won’t fall apart again.
You can leave them just as they are, or spray paint them with your favorite color(s) or to blend with your home décor. Leaving the baskets unpainted and discretely tied together with wire will give the decoration a rustic look.
If you’ve painted them, make sure they are dry. Then you can wrap them with a strand of Christmas lights and hang them up on the patio or at your next party for some festive scenery that will get noticed.
Creativity is the issue here – use your imagination and make these basket-balls fit your tastes and your occasions. You could just as easily spray paint them orange for Halloween, and put a yellow light inside for that jack-o-lantern look, or decorate them in bright colors and ribbons for an Easter egg hunt or birthday party. The best part is that you can go on re-decorating or re-painting them just as long as you want.
The next time you’re planning a party around the house, stop and consider those old planter baskets and think of a way to put them to good use.
