She Takes A Welcome Mat And Paints Glue Over The Entire Thing. Why? This Is So Neat

When it comes to welcome mats, there’s no denying that for every awesome one, there are about a million corny, dull, or downright ugly ones. So why not skip the trouble of going from store to store to find the perfect welcome mat, and make your own instead? That’s precisely what you can do with just a few simple materials and some easy-to-follow instructions.

To get started, you’ll need to gather up some supplies. Acquire the following:

  • Sturdy rubber door mat
  • Decorator-weight fabric that you love
  • Good pair of scissors
  • Paint brush
  • Spray adhesive
  • Polyurethane (water-based)
  • Ironing board
  • Iron

Once you’ve compiled these materials, most of which you probably already have around your home, you’re ready to start!

Step #1

Use your scissors to cut the mat into the size and shape you wish and then cut your fabric so that it will cover it completely. In order to ensure that your fabric is large enough, leave about two inches of excess fabric on all sides.

Step #2

Eliminate all wrinkles by ironing the fabric thoroughly.

Step #3

Apply the adhesive to the rubber mat’s smooth side and place the mat firmly on the fabric. Take great care to remove any wrinkles or air bubbles.

Step #4

Again, take your adhesive and spray the edges of the fabric. Secure them gently, yet firmly to the underside of the mat.

Step #5

Lastly, cover the mat completely with polyurethane. Allow to dry for two hours and repeat, until you have around three layers of polyurethane on your brand-new, personalized door mat!
