Jeff Bell the Republican candidate for a Senate seat in New Jersey believes that single mothers are to blame for his poor poll ratings. Bell claims these women are dependent on government benefits, so their party preference is Democratic. Single mothers in New Jersey are wed to the Democratic Party by design according to Bell. They need Democratic benefits to survive in his opinion. He claims the increase in the number of single mothers in the state has eroded his chances of electoral success.
Bell claims men tend to vote for change. He insists that woman are more cautious when it comes to voting for change, so he appears to be putting his political faith and his future in the hands of male voters. But Bell’s unpopularity with woman voters may not be rooted in the need for government subsidy programs. His lack of female support may have a lot to do with his radical stand on abortion.
Bell is a supporter of Rand Paul’s fetal personhood bill, and only ten percent of the residents of New Jersey support a ban on abortion. Bell wants to ban abortions even when rape is involved. That political stand and his insistence that access to contraception increases the number of abortions has impacted his poll numbers. Recent studies indicate that access to birth control reduces the number of surgical abortions.
Female voters, especially single ones, have a history of voting Democratic. A large number of women consider the Republican Party intolerant. According to the latest polls in New Jersey that belief hasn’t changed. Bell’s Democratic opponent is currently ahead in the polls by fifteen percent.
