Atlanta, Georgia – Doris Lewis is a recent widow who lost her health insurance coverage when her husband passed away three years ago. Since that time, she has not sought out insurance on her own as she largely believed herself to be healthy IE could not or would not afford the insurance premiums.
It is a decision many people make, but it Mrs. Lewis’ case it turned out to literally be a “big” mistake. This is because she has devolved a benign, but fast growing tumor that has woven itself about her ovaries and is putting pressure on her vital organs. The tumor has grown to what physicians believe is the size of a beach ball. Mrs. Lewis looks like she is only weeks away from delivering a child.
However, she has been turned away from four area hospitals due to her lack of insurance coverage. Given that the state of Georgia only minimally participates in Obamacare, she did not have the option to simply sign up for insurance now that a health issue has arisen. All the while, the tumor grows.
The pain it is causing her has increased steadily from a headache to more severe pain finally landing her in an emergency ward. It was there a physician arranged for her to have the corrective surgery. Obviously, Mrs. Lewis is eager to have the tumor out as soon as possible, but her surgery isn’t scheduled until June 10. At least, she no longer has the fear that her lack of health care insurance will result in her death.
