Usually when you look down a trash chute you expect to see trash at the bottom. Maybe you also expect to see live animals. But surely you wouldn’t expect dogs … A group of workers were looking at down a chute and saw what they believed to be a dead dog. But it was far from dead – it was Patrick.
Maintenance workers were cleaning the chute when they noticed the animal inside a trash bag. It was apparent that someone had quite literally thrown the dog away without a hint of decency. The dog was struggling to breathe, struggling to live. If the workers hadn’t found the dog, Patrick, when they had the Canine American would have likely perished.
The local animal control shelter was called, and officers arrived on scene to extract the animal for examination. Patrick’s temperature was extremely low, so they started him on fluids via an IV so that he could take on nutrients. The staff at the shelter wrapped the pooch in warm blankets to try and bring his temperature back up to a normal range. The dog was quickly sent to an animal hospital and observed for about 24 hours.
The dog was given a bath and a blood transfusion and soon Patrick’s critical signs began to balance and normalize. Soon, there were donations coming to the shelter for his care and it wasn’t long before a family discovered Patrick and adopted him. It is safe to say that Patrick will never find himself in a plastic bag at the bottom of a garbage chute ever again… He’s looking very happy at his new home with his new owner.
