There were recently reports of a Middle Eastern gunman on the campus of the University of Central Florida. There were news helicopters and assault rifles rushed to the campus.
When they arrived on the campus, they found at the alleged gunman was a young Muslim woman wearing a hijab who was reading the Quran. The woman also prayed in the hallway before she went inside of the library.
When the woman walked out of the library, she was confused and scared along with the rest of the students. Everyone left the library. It turns out that the incident occurred because someone lied. This is the type of thing that many Muslim Americans deal with on a daily basis. They are unfairly stereotyped because of their religion.
People who are of Middle Eastern descent are unfairly labelled as terrorists. As soon as someone reported that there was a Middle Eastern person on campus, officers jumped to conclusions. However, studies have shown that Middle Eastern people are not the main ones committing the majority of the crimes. This is unfortunate because everyone deserves to be treated fairly regardless of their religious beliefs. Focusing on Muslims is also taking people away from the real issues that are going on in this country.
