It’s that time of year again. The Santas are filling shelves, and jingle bells are ringing from speakers at stores everywhere, snow is falling, and, of course, the conservative are claiming that the “War on Christmas” is is raging on. Even though it is still early in the season, they have already started things off with a banging boycott attempt against the coffee company Starbucks because they changed their cup decoration (and no this isn’t satirical, it is actually happening).
Last month, Starbucks announced the design chang for the holiday season, in a way that is festive and still all-inclusive. A simple red up design with their green logo has been chosen – holiday colors, jut no holiday design. Few would even notice such a change, but some conservative christians are using this as fodder to rally zealots against this alleged “war”.
The accusers’ problem with the design is that over the past years, Starbucks had put embellished their cups with christmas trees, snowflakes and ice skates. Because previous cup decorations were apparently emblematic of Christmas, conservatives are now claiming that by removing them, Starbucks has given into “liberal political correctness” and will pay the price via their silly boycott.
Some have stated that Starbucks is attempting to “hide the religious message behind Christmas” and that they’re “afraid of celebrating” the holiday. Such a tactic isn’t uncommon amongst this breed, though: corral behind some obscure “offense” only they notice and raise hell about it for no goddamn reason.
Needless to say, their threat of boycott won’t phase a massive corporation like Starbucks (who probably secretly planned this stint to distress conservative Christian in an evil-corporation-master-plan-liberal-attack-on-Christ-mas). Their Coffee shops are all over the world, and even within America people would rather get their 7AM fix than make a stand over a different looking disposable cup than they’re used to.
