When a pet begins the labor and delivery process, it’s often a miracle how she brings the new litter into the world. Velma is a Great Dane who lives in Alabama and she became a mother early in December, 2015. Her owners knew that she was pregnant, and they thought that she would deliver about 10 puppies.
As time went by and the delivery date got closer, they were surprised to learn that she would have 19 puppies instead of the 10. It took about 19 hours to deliver the puppies with one being born each hour. The puppies are healthy and from the pictures that have been taken, they are adorable as well.
This delivery is rare as it is one of the largest litters that have been delivered among one of the largest breeds in the world. As with any animal, it’s sometimes hard to make sure all of the babies have enough to eat as there are only so many nipples available.
However, Velma is making sure all of her babies get food so that they can grow into beautiful, healthy dogs like herself. The nursing process looks like musical chairs as she will go from one pup to another.
