Need coasters? Don’t get caught spending money at a store when you can easily fashion your own. Coasters are simple technology that you could probably find substitutes for in every room of your home. Here is one example using ceramic tiles, colored Sharpies , an eyedropper, and rubbing alcohol.
You don’t need to be a great artist for this project. You could use the uncolored tiles alone and it would serve the purpose … but for the sake of aesthetics we recommend simply scribbling lightly over the ceramic tiles with the markers. This not only gives the coasters a unique, experimental look, but prepares them for the next step.
Once the Sharpie ink has dried, you will be taking the eyedropper and dipping it into the rubbing alcohol. Using the eyedropper place the rubbing alcohol onto the colored coasters, and the chemicals will do the artwork for you. The colors blend together, creating psychedelic arrays of color, not unlike tie-dye designs. Thankfully, you can experiment with this method a number of times, creating a number of coasters, garner a unique array of table protectors.
And this is a cheap project to boot. A Sharpies are 50 cents per marker, a pint of rubbing alcohol runs for around $3, and this will last for a long time (and -mixed with salt – works great for cleaning bongs). A standard eyedropper costs only cents and ceramic tiles can be bought for less than $2, or even found as waste at developments.
