If you’ve been to Michigan in the past few years, you’ll notice a distinct difference. Detroit in particular has been a hotspot of media attention after their 2013 bankruptcy. It made history as the largest city to file for bankruptcy protection, though the actual cause of this descent is debatable.
It’s a known fact that for decades, Detroit had to borrow money to provide basic services to its citizens. The city has a population of 1.8 million in 1950 that gradually reduced to 700,000 people. Since the fall of the auto industry, namely GM, Chrysler, and Ford, Detroit’s sales seriously began to suffer and as a result more and more factories went abandoned.
Since the chaotic downfall of Detroit, some citizens have decided to do their part to make a positive change for the downtrodden city. One woman in particular has begun to resurrect dilapidated homes and turn them into something good. Her name is Lisa Waud, and this floral designer initiated what she calls The Flower House.
In this project, Waud filled one of the two homes she purchased with thousands of flowers to remind people just how beautiful the city once was and still can be. Once these homes are filled with flowers, they will be demolished and the property will host a flower farm. Waud is currently crowdfunding her efforts to make a positive change for the community. What will other residents do for their struggling city?
