Steven Sotloff, an American journalist who held dual citizenship in both the United States and Israel was seen through obtained video footage getting beheaded by ISIS miltants on September 2, 2014.
Sotloff was kidnapped on August 4, 2013 just after crossing into Syria from Turkey. On August 19, 2014, ISIS released video of a journalist by the name of James Foley being executed. ISIS stated that President Obamas next move would mean the life of Steven Sotloff.
During his time in captivity, Sotloff was forced to hide his faith of Judaism from his ISIS kidnappers for fear of his life. Stoloff even managed to fast during the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur by telling the ISIS militants that he was “sick” and “didn’t want to eat.” During his year in captivity, Sotloff managed to hide his dual nationality as well as his faith. Israeli media was aware that Sotloff has been living in Jerusalem since 2008 but did not release that information in order to help protect Sotloff.
Sotloff “deeply loved the Islamic world, for this he is threatened with beheading” said a friend via twitter. Following the execution of September 4, President Obama released a statement “vowing justice for the death of Steven Sotloff.”
