Caitlyn the dog had a rough start in life. After being found with her muzzle taped shut with electrical tape, she had to endure a surgical procedure to repair her tongue and mouth. As she has recovered in a Charleston, South Carolina shelter, Caitlyn, a Staffordshire bull terrier, has become an inspiration to animal activists worldwide.

The Charleston Fire Department has made Caitlyn the star of its yearly calendar, which raises money for local charity Toby’s Fund. The fund provides assistance for animals that have been abandoned, abused or injured. Caitlyn was photographed with the most handsome, rugged firefighters in the city.

When Caitlyn was first brought in, veterinarians thought she would lose a large amount of lips and tongue, but it turned out only a very small portion of each had to be amputated. The dog received high-tech care, including reconstructive mouth surgery, a hyperbaric chamber and therapy with a cold laser. She is now eating well and making a fast recovery from her surgery.

William Dodson, former owner of Caitlyn, was arrested in Charleston and faces animal cruelty charges. He could be fined $50,000 and spend five years in prison for his gross mistreatment of the dog.
