A poor choice for a contraceptive results in a women visiting to the hospital.
A 22-year old Columbian woman went to the hospital to receive treatment because she was experiencing abdominal pains. Hospital officials were shocked to see that the woman had a potato growing inside her vagina. According to reports the potato had grown roots and was germinated.
After questioning the 22-year-old woman about the potato, she informed them that she was using the vegetable as a contraceptive. She stated that she got the idea to use the potato as a contraceptive from her mother. According to the 22-year-old woman, her mother advised her to use a potato so that she would not get pregnant.
The doctors were able to successfully remove the potato from inside of the woman and confirmed that she should not have any lasting health issues or pain due to the “potato contraceptive”.
Staff members of the hospital condemned the 22-year-old woman’s mother for giving her daughter such horrible advice.
Even though this was an unusual case, stories such as these help to reveal that there is a lack of proper sex education being taught throughout the country. This lack of education should not exist since sex education is a mandatory subject in Columbia.
Maria Eugenia Rosselli, the Colombian Ministry of Education allegedly blamed the lack of sex conversations between the youth and their parents is contributing to missing information regarding sex and sex contraceptives from being shared.
Campaigns such as the Columbian Institute of Family Welfare – were founded to help decrease the number teenage pregnancies. The high level of teenage pregnancies has been linked to a lack of knowledge regarding contraceptives within the population of the young people. The campaign has also revealed that some female teenagers become pregnant because they are forced into having unprotected sex.
