He Eats Lunch With This Homeless Woman Everyday. Then He Discovers How She Uses Her Money

Greg Smith is a hero, at least to one homeless woman in downtown Orlando, Florida. Greg operates his business, Hybrid Athletes, in downtown Orlando, where seeing homeless men and women is common. Unlike other busy professionals, Greg actually took notice of one homeless woman, called Amy, who simply wished him a good day instead of asking for money. She was always at the intersection Pine Street and S. Orange Ave., yet she never asked him for anything. Intrigued, Smith decided that he would get to know her better.

Now, every Tuesday, Greg and Amy have lunch together. He discovered that not all homeless people drink and do drugs; Amy did neither. Instead, her handicap was that she couldn’t read.

Greg soon discovered that Amy was trying to learn, using her money to get books that might teach her to read. She would forgo food to learn, with the hope that knowing how to read would help her land a job.

Today, Greg Smith is teaching Amy how to read each Tuesday. He’s shared his story on Facebook, not because he’s bragging about doing a good deed, but because he wants to inspire others not to ignore a homeless person who simply wants a chance to better his or her life. Too many people assume every homeless person wants money for drugs or alcohol, however, Greg Smith proved that this isn’t always true.
