It was September fifth, sometime around dusk when the hoards of migrants began pouring over the border and into Austria. They were tired and happy, weak from days trapped in Hungary limbo. They were ready for refuge. Thousands of them. Having fled their homes in the Middle East and Africa after war and tattered governments left them forsaken.

Austria and Germany reluctantly granted asylum to masses of refugees.The travelers were welcomed in Austria with hot tea and food. Many of them stayed. Others continued onwards towards Germany.

The refugees are generally happy to be out of Hungary. Austria and Germany had neglected them and ignored their cries for asylum until the last possible moment. Up until then, they’d been stranded within Hungary where the air reeked of unwelcome discrimination. Hungary didn’t want them there and they were very much aware.

So when the bureaucratic machines of Austria and Germany were too slow to acknowledge them, and cancelled their train from Budapest to Austria. Naturally, some of the refugees weren’t happy by this prospect and determined to walk the whole way if necessary. It was at this point that Germany And Austria, with no choice left, put on their best smiles, brewed some hot tea, and sent busses and trains out for their guests. What gracious hosts.
