On September 21, 1988, Patti Berns was found unconscious inside of an inferno at her North Richland Hills, Texas home. She died three days later. Her three 17-month-old triplet daughters, Chandra, Jordan Mae and Trea Lynn, suffered third degree burns in the fire that left scars on approximately one-third of their bodies.
An investigation more than two years later determined that the fire was deliberately set, with the triplets’ father, Scott Berns, being put on trial for the crime. He would be acquitted of the charges. But the memories of that horrific event are as ever present. The girls’ scars remain visible to this day. Sadly some of their fellow students took made fun of the sisters, equating the family’s surname, Berns, with their plight. Even those that said nothing offered only stares and whispers to friends and acquaintances.
These challenges brought the three sisters even closer together, and bonded them as a team. In 2009, they were offered the chance to try out a laser treatment from a Palm Beach, FL doctor that would smooth out the scars, which they eagerly accepted. The six treatments of the ultrapulse fractional ablative laser finally resulted in eliminating the vast majority of the scars. It was miraculous.
Their successful transformation was publicized, leaing to more than 50,000 individuals eventually being treated for burns.
and Jordan Mae scheduled to be wed this year. Jordan Mae will be able to wear a wedding gown that once would have shown parts of her burned body, and that is a fact she finds amazing.
