Donald Trump Jr., the son of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, has recently made a remark he probably would love to take back if he had a time machine. Trump Jr. just told reporters that the media is in cahoots with the Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and that they are covering up many lies. One of the major lies Trump Jr. believe the media is covering up is how the Democrats treated Senator Bernie Sanders at the Democratic National Convention. Sanders, of course, ran unsuccessfully against Clinton in the Democratic primaries.
But it was what Trump Jr. said at the end of this media tirade that really has people talking. He said that if the Republicans were acting just as the Democrats currently are, the media wouldn’t be covering their actions up. Instead, Trump Jr. said that the media would be “warming up the gas chamber right now” for the Republicans.
This comment was a reference to the gas chambers used by German National Socialists during World War II. Most of these gas chambers were used at European concentration camps against Communists, Jews, Gypsies, and other so-called “degenerates.” This mass genocide is known across the world as either the Holocaust or the Shoah.
Immediately after Trump Jr. made this comment, the Jewish Anti-Defamation League put out a tweet that made it clear that “trivializing” the gas chambers used by the Nazis is never OK. Other reporters also began to use Twitter to expose Trump Jr.’s remark to the world and put him in his place. These reporters include Yair Rosenberg, Jesse Lehrich, Noah Rothman, and Chloe Angyal. As you can see, a great many Jewish reporters took great offense to Trump Jr.’s hurtful comments.
This was not the first time that Trump Jr. has been accused of anti-Semitism. Trump Jr. has made some questionable retweets in recent days from neo-Nazi and white supremacist groups. Democratic supporters only hope that the public will take a closer look at Trump Jr.’s track record after these startling comments.
