Teachers and parents in Detroit are using social media to raise awareness about the horrendous conditions in the city’s public schools. Educators have used Twitter to post photos of the terrible infrastructure inside of many of Detroit’s deteriorating schools. The images show everything from mold and mildew to mushrooms and feces inside classrooms, halls and other facilities.
In addition to dealing with such health hazards, teachers and students in Detroit also face many other inconveniences. For example, kids and instructors have to wear heavy jackets and coats in the classroom during the winter time. In the summer season, students also suffer tremendously because of a lack of air conditioning. However, it seems that faulty climate control systems are only on the lighter spectrum of problems for Detroit’s public schools. Michigan’s governor is partly to blame for the shocking conditions in Detroit’s classrooms.
Rick Snyder has been accused of being incompetent when it comes to handling the state’s financial emergency management. In fact, this agency is responsible for poisoning the drinking water in the city of Flint just to save some money for municipal and state budgets. Fortunately, Detroit’s mayor Mike Duggan had the chance to tour some of the schools in Detroit. He was shocked by what he saw and called for prompt and drastic changes to the management of public schools not just in Detroit but also statewide.
In addition to posting photos, teachers in Detroit have organized other forms of mass protests. For example, many educators simply didn’t show up for work because they claimed they’re too sick. Such actions emphasized the health hazards that are associated with stepping inside the filthy schools in Detroit. It’s clear that the city of Detroit is fed up with the neglect of its education system that has been miserably failing for years because of incompetent politicians.
