The Senate Select Committee on Intelligence issued the report on torture methods used by the CIA in response to 9/11, and it shines a glaring light on the behavior of the previous administration. Many have believed, or just suspected, that there was subterfuge going on in the Bush administration and this Senate report seems to validate it.
According to Bloomberg “President George W. Bush was never briefed by the Central Intelligence Agency on the details of harsh interrogation techniques and secret detention of terror suspects for the first four years of the controversial program, and when he did find out the details, he was “uncomfortable” with some of the practices.” Uncomfortable, really?
It is nice to know he was uncomfortable, although that discomfort did not extend to doing anything about it. In fact he and his people moved to cover it up, knowing what the American response would be. While covering it up they also felt the need to talk about how torture is a necessary part in keeping American’s safe.
Since that administrations time ran out Vice-President Cheney has vigorously defended the policies that this Senate report brings to light. Just this year he is reported in the school newspaper the Eagle as saying, “If I would have to do it all over again I would, the results speak for themselves.” Really. Despite overwhelming evidence torture does not work. In fact many behind the scenes have reported this very fact. Yet the actions are still defended.
