Pro-life Republicans have a noble cause. They desire to protect the sanctity of life. They see the extermination of a helpless fetus, viewed by them and millions of others as a baby, as a moral outrage. Perhaps they are right. A hundred years from now, we might look back at pro-life supporters the same we way we view abolitionists today. Our children’s children may very well shudder at how fiercely people cried for a so-called right to end a life with infinite potential. However, that day may never come if pro-life individuals do not start protecting all children. This includes children inside and outside of their mothers.
Pro-life Republicans have a chance to prove this with the current refugee crisis in Syria. They can say they support life by allowing innocent children and their families to come to the United States. Unfortunately, pro-life Republicans are missing out on this chance. Instead of living up to their very real claims of morality, Republicans are content to let children that are alive and well remain trapped in a hostile and dangerous country.
Recently, calloused conversation and brutal images regarding abortion shared through social media shocked America. They caused many to reassess the rights behind certain choices. It is hoped the below images will do the same for Syrian children. Will pro-life Republicans share these images of children as fiercely as they shared recent images of abortion?
Is there a pro-life Republican who will see the picture of a young Syrian boy desperately holding onto the hand of his parent in a crowd of strangers fleeing for safety?
Is there a pro-life Republican who will see the picture of Fatima in a lonely apartment?
She stares ahead in the photo, and she claims she dreams she is falling out of the boat that carried her and her brothers away from the crisis.
Is there a pro-life Republican who will see the picture of Shiraz? He is nine years old, and he is stricken with polio. He lays mute in a refugee camp waiting for someone to help him.
Is there a pro-life Republican who will see the picture of Rahma? She is completely blind, and she waits for a place to go. Until then, she sits in a refugee tent.
Is there a pro-life Republican who will see the picture of Shiar? He is only 10, and his body is horribly disfigured from touching an IED while trying to cross the border. He has only three fingers left, and he will remain disfigured for the remainder of this life.
Are these pro-life Republicans out there? If so, are they seeing these pictures? If they are, why are they not doing anything about them? Where is their call to protect life? Where is their outrage about all the helplessness? Pro-life Republicans have a chance to make a bold statement about the sanctity of life. Why aren’t they making it?
It is possible they haven’t seen these images. However, these pictures and hundreds of others are being shared through the media everyday. Is it possible that pro-life Republicans see these pictures and don’t care? Sadly, this may increasingly be the case. Their unwillingness to offer these children a better home in the United States suggest there very well may be no such thing as a pro-life Republican.
But feelings can change. Let Republicans, Democrats, and everyone know that all life is precious, especially the most vulnerable. Call upon Republicans to protect the refugee children in Syria with the same fiery passion they use to protect the unborn. If we can convince them to do so, perhaps these children can be saved.
