Arlington, Washington resident Louise Edlin, 93, has had the same morning ritual for the five years straight. She is always there to wave at the kids on the school bus as it passes her home each day – she is affectionately known to the children as “the grandma in the window.”
But recently, the bus passed by Eldin’s house, and she was not in her usual place. The children became concerned, and their bus driver, Carol Mitzelfeld, asked around to figure out why the friendly woman wasn’t in her usual perch. Eventually, she learned that Louise had suffered from a stroke. It was tough news to explain to the kids, but they came up with a wonderful surprise for Ms. Eldin.
They decided to send flowers in hopes of cheering her up. Carol took the flowers to Louise, who was truly touched by the gesture. The stroke had left her with almost no ability to speak, so she created a large “thank you” sign and placed it in the window of her home for the children to see.
The kids were so pleased, they decided to give Louise a large photo of the bus with everyone waving to her. Dave, Louise’s husband, said seeing the children every day means everything to her, and that she will soon be waving from the window once again.
