Last week, Paper Magazine published an interview with Miley Cyrus that concentrated on her Happy Hippie Foundation that helps LGBT and homeless young people. It also included her views about sexuality.
During the interview, Cyrus scolded conservatives for their desire to force their religious beliefs on others and for their hatred of LGBT people. In Paper Magazine, Cyrus is described as feeling contempt towards fundamentalist lawmakers and says they should not get to make laws. She also described literal belief in the Bible as “insane” and said society should “have outgrown that fairytale.”
Bristol Palin read about the interview on a Fox News report and blew a gasket. On her blog, she accused Cyrus of being a hypocrite because of her intolerance for Christians.
The “Christians” Cyrus won’t tolerate are the fundamentalists who have been trying to make laws that restrict the rights of gay people even though most Americans support gay marriage. While Palin added that Cyrus was disrespectful towards her parents and their beliefs, Billy Ray Cyrus actually supports same-sex marriage and gets along well with his daughter’s gay friends.
Conservative Christians can say what they like, for they have the same First Amendment rights as everybody else. They do not, however, have the right to demand that everybody else abide by their beliefs. Nor do they have the right to insist that those beliefs be made law.
