Every day, thousands of babies are born across the United States. Childbirth costs have soared out of control in the country. An actor named Stephen McGann tweeted out a medical bill from Twitter user @YumiYoko that had recently given birth at Philadelphia’s Abington Memorial Hospital. She had delivered her child via a c-section and when she was going home, the hospital issued her a bill that totaled more than $42,000. McGann did this in June to illustrate just how high the childbirth costs would be in his home country of Britain if they did not have the NHS.
The United States is seen as being behind many other developed countries in terms of it’s health care system. Many people go through bankruptcy each year due to incurring high medical bills. The problem has impacted many lower and middle class families. Now, people are afraid to have to have a c-section if they are uninsured.
Even people with health insurance have to pay high insurance deductibles whenever they give birth. Obamacare has helped people try to get insurance through exchanges, but sadly this problem is still apparent everywhere. The tweet resonated with many people across the globe who feel that the US needs to overhaul the healthcare system so that people do not get priced out of basic health care services any longer.
Hospitals and insurance companies have focused more on profits than on patient care. This has sadly turned an exciting moment like a birth into a cause for worry for many women in the U.S.
