A Florida police officer witnessed a surprising sight while recently visiting a jail in the area. Two inmates, who had extra privileges for good behavior, suddenly stopped working in the motor pool and stood still. After a few moments, it become clear why the inmates had taken this action.
Each day at exactly noon, the jail played “The Star Spangled Banner” over the PA system. The pair of inmates, who were unaware that anyone was watching or taking video of them, had stopped working to pay their respects to their country. They stood motionless with their hands over their hearts until the music ended.
Many inmates participate in programs as a part of their rehabilitation, including helping senior citizens and raising service animals to aid disabled people. It is thought that participation in such activities encourages offenders to think about others, builds their self esteem and makes them less likely to commit more crimes.
The video of the inmates has gone viral, sparking conversation about their patriotism and humility despite their current circumstances. While the pair have obviously broken laws and made other mistakes, continuing to be humble and following the rules will lead them back into being productive members of society.
