Many Americans were shocked to read President Donald Trump’s latest tweet concerning his relationships with the Russians. At 4:03AM on May 16th, Trump wrote this on Twitter:
“As President I wanted to share with Russia (at an openly scheduled W.H. meeting) which I have the absolute right to do, facts pertaining…”
This tweet, along with the previous accusations of collusion with the Kremlin, has led some Congressmen to consider drafting an impeachment bill against Donald Trump. Although there’s no official draft passing through Congress right now, many journalists and citizens are hopeful an impeachment bill could soon hold President Trump accountable for passing classified information to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The main reason many lawmakers are supporting an impeachment bill has to do first and foremost with national security. Some believe Donald Trump has put American security greatly at risk by sharing this classified information with the Russians. They also believe Trump’s admission to sharing documents with Russian officials constitutes “high crimes and misdemeanors,” which is something the Founding Fathers included in the official impeachment clauses.
Many professional journalists have already begun drafting impeachment bills and sending them around the World Wide Web. Some of these drafted impeachment articles focus on Trump’s inability to follow the Emoluments Clause, his violation of the constitutional oath to protect and serve American interests, and Trump’s repeated attempts to halt both the Justice Department and Congress from legally investigating his dealings with Russia.
Just a few other articles being drafted against Trump right now include Trump’s condescending attitude towards military personnel, his verbal attacks on members of the federal judiciary, and the firing former FBI Director James Comey. Many believe Trump fired Comey to cover up any evidence of U.S.-Russian collusion.
The process to remove Trump from office, however, won’t happen overnight. The first step in the impeachment process is to open up a broad congressional inquiry into the issue. During these congressional meetings, a team of drafters will have to come up with an official list of impeachment articles. These articles will then be brought before the House of Representatives and the Senate for a vote.
Many popular alt-right reporters are coming to the defense of Donald Trump on sites like YouTube. Channels like Paul Joseph Watson, styxhexenhammer666, and Stefan Molyneux are blaming the corporate media with hyping up these claims of Trump’s “unlawful” partnership with the Russians. Also, most Trump supporters are still defending the president at every turn.
Even the most passionate critics of Donald Trump admit that it will be almost impossible to get enough support to draft these impeachment articles with a Republican majority in the House and Senate. However, these critics are hopeful that Speaker Paul Ryan and Majority Leader Mitch McConnell will put party loyalties aside and do what is right for the nation.
If Democrats take back control of the House and/or Senate in the 2018 Congressional elections, then the likelihood of an impeachment trial will be higher. As it stands today, the likelihood of an impeachment process starting in Congress is around 30 percent.
If this bill does get drafted, it would make President Trump the fourth leader in American history to have an impeachment bill waged against him. The other presidents who faced impeachment bills include Andrew Johnson, Richard Nixon, and Bill Clinton.
