Congress Hands Donald Trump Another Humiliating Defeat at a Critical Time

President Donald Trump’s attempt to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act (ACA) hit another roadblock on Friday as the plan had limited support from moderates and none at all from Democrats. Paul Ryan said that more discussion was needed, and the vote would be delayed until next week.

The delay is a major setback for Trump whose administration has failed to pass any significant legislation during his first 100 days in office. The White House had earlier attempted to reassure Trump supporters by announcing the vote would take place this week and would give the president at least one accomplishment in that time period.

The future of the ACA is now uncertain. Those who voted against the first version of the plan are unlikely to approve the new, more restrictive update. Some who supported the initial proposal are currently unsure how they will vote going forward.

Pennsylvania Representative Ryan Costello said he was concerned about the updated bill’s lack of protection for those with pre-existing conditions. While Costello voted yes on the original plan, he said he will vote against the bill in its current form.

Three other Republicans also spoke against the plan. New York’s John Katko, Washington’s Jamie Beutler and Pennsylvania’s Pat Meehan all expressed concern about pre-existing conditions.

Despite opposition, Republican leaders are certain they can get the votes to pass the bill. On Thursday, it was reported that Rodney Frelinghuysen, who serves as House Appropriations Chairman, had said he would vote for the plan. His office has made no official comment.
