#AlternativeFacts: Kellyanne Conway’s Orwellian Term Receives Twitter Mockery It Deserves

Social media is abuzz with the #AlternativeFacts trending, as controversy swirls around President Trump’s White House Press Secretary reprimanded the media during Saturday’s press conference. During the infamous conference, Sean Spicer told the press that the president and his cabinet would not allow the media to continue to spread falsehoods, such as the number of people in attendance at Trump’s inauguration. Trump’s camp is defending their claims that there was a record breaking turnout.

As part of their damage control, Kellyanne Conway made an appearance on Meet The Press. However, she seemed to do more harm than good. When host Chuck Todd began to question about Spicer’s verbal assault on the media, Conway’s reply completely obliterated any hope that she had of clearing up the controversy.

“Don’t be so overly dramatic about it, Chuck,” Conway replied. “They’re saying it’s a falsehood and our press secretary, Sean Spicer, gave alternative facts to that.”

Todd immediately questioned her use of the made up term, “alternative facts.” As he called her out on her disguising of falsehoods, he continued to remind her of the pettiness of the situation.

“You sent the press secretary out there to utter a falsehood on the smallest, pettiest thing,” Todd continued. “And I don’t understand why you did it.”

After the interview gone wrong, social media took the term “alternative facts” and made it into a viral trend by posting their examples of “alternative facts.” Some chose to use past nonsensical quotes from President Trump, while other took the chance to make a joke of their own. For example, former N’Sync band member, Lance Bass tweeted “as a member of the Backstreet Boys, I had a love child with Betty White. #AlternativeFacts.”

However, many embraced it, saying they just choose to believe that Hillary is president right now. Of course, there were also several illusions to past dictators, such as Stalin. There was also memes, such as a children’s Golden Book entitled, “Alternative Facts” that listed a bird as a butterfly and grapes as marbles.

As social media continues to have a little fun at President Trump and his advisors expense, many can not help but wonder what the future holds for a presidency that seems attack anyone who has something negative to say.

It is like George Orwell wrote in 1984, “War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength.”
