Outrage Over Oregon Standoff Verdict – White Militants Acquitted While Natives Maced, Beaten

People are outraged after seven Oregon militants were acquitted. People have stated that white privilege and racial bias were the reasons that the militants were not punished. The jury who acquitted the militants were all white. They deliberated for six hours before they came up with a verdict. The militants were found not guilty despite the fact the ordeal was live-streamed.

People have also pointed out the fact that Native American protesters were attacked for peacefully protesting. Even though they were not doing anything wrong, they were physically attacked and sprayed with mace. People also stated that if the militants were black or Native American, they likely would have been killed. German Lopez works for the Vox. He stated that it is impossible to say that race did not play a role in this case.

German stated that there is no reason for a group of armed militants to be let go. They took over the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge and occupied it for over 40 days. Ammon Bundy was the leader of the group. There were 30 weapons seized after the militant standoff.

German Lopez stated that there is a distinct difference between the way that white children and black children are treated. White children are considered innocent while black children are forced to be held responsible for their actions at a young age. Colin Holbrook led a study that showed that black children are more likely to be seen as criminals.
