Many people in North Carolina are outraged after a police officer killed a deaf man. The man, whose name was Daniel Kevin Harris, was driving on the freeway when an officer attempted to pull him over for speeding. Daniel did not know that the officer was trying to pull him over, and he continued driving. The officer followed Daniel to his home and shot him.
Mark Barringer heard the gunshots. He stated that Daniel was trying to communicate with the officer by using sign language. Mark also stated that the killing was unacceptable. Furthermore, Mark said that police officers should be trained to properly deal with someone who has a disability.
Daniel’s family has started a Gofundme in order to pay for the medical expenses. The goal is $10,000, and they have raised $5,000. The family not only wants to raise money to pay for the funeral, but they also want to ensure that future police officers are educated about mute and deaf citizens.
Trooper Jermaine Saunders is the officer who shot Daniel. He has been placed on administrative leave until the investigation is complete. The North Carolina State Bureau Of Investigation is reviewing the body cam and dash cam footage.
